Dr. Amos Russell Thomas [1827-1895] was a surgeon and prominent professor of anatomy. He was born and resided in New York until he relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1854. There he was appointed to be a demonstrator of anatomy at the Pennsylvania Medical University, and was Chair of Anatomy from 1856 to 1866. This collection includes 48 glass models of various cephalopods, nudibranchs, sea slugs, and invertebrates crafted by Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka, along with their associated back boards and labels. The back boards are the original boards created for the models when acquired by the Academy, and the armatures and bases of the jellyfish models are confirmed to be the original pieces by Miranda Lowe of the Natural History Museum, London.
